Red Top Lawanda
The Red Top Lwanda Peacock Cichlid is a breathtaking addition to any Lake Malawi setup. Dominant males display a radiant metallic blue sheen across their head and body, accentuated by a signature yellow-to-orange blaze along the top of the dorsal fin. In contrast, females exhibit a subtle brown coloration with distinct vertical bars. These magnificent fish are popular for their vivid appearance and active nature in a community of similar cichlids.
Maintaining their health requires an omnivorous diet. Provide them with a variety of nutrient-rich cichlid pellets and regular servings of frozen brine shrimp to enhance their natural brilliance. As natural foragers, they enjoy exploring their environment for food.
A minimum 55-gallon aquarium is essential to provide adequate swimming room. Incorporating a mix of sandy substrates and complex rockwork with plenty of caves will simulate their native habitat, helping to manage territorial behavior while providing secure hiding spots.
Cobue Afra
Cobue Afra “Dog Tooth” Cichlid – Vibrant Yellow African Cichlid
The Cobue Afra, also known as the “Dog Tooth” cichlid, is a stunning African cichlid prized for its bold color and personality. Mature males develop a vibrant yellow blaze across their forehead and back, contrasted by rich blue and dark vertical barring along the body. This striking combination makes them a true centerpiece fish in any Lake Malawi community or species tank.
In the aquarium, Cobue Afra are active, semi-aggressive rock dwellers that thrive in hard, alkaline water with plenty of caves and rockwork. They do best in a well-filtered tank with stable water parameters and tankmates of similar size and temperament.
Their diet is omnivorous but leans strongly toward herbivorous foods. For long-term health and color, offer a high-quality spirulina- or algae-based pellet or flake as the staple, supplemented with blanched vegetables (such as spinach, zucchini, or peas) and occasional protein treats like brine shrimp or daphnia. Avoid heavy, meaty foods to prevent digestive issues.
With proper care, the Cobue Afra “Dog Tooth” cichlid rewards aquarists with intense color, interesting behavior, and a vibrant display that brings a slice of Lake Malawi into your home aquarium.

Fusco or Dark Banded Cichlid
The Fusco Cichlid (Nimbochromis fuscotaeniatus) or Dark Banded Cichlid is a powerful, predatory African cichlid prized for its bold patterning and impressive size. A true piscivore, this species is highly aggressive toward smaller fish and is best kept with robust, similarly sized tankmates. In the wild and in aquariums, Fusco Cichlids are known for their unique hunting behavior, sometimes lying still and “playing dead” to lure curious prey within striking distance. Fusco Cichlids can grow up to 12 inches in length, so they require a spacious aquarium of at least 75 gallons. Provide a sandy or fine gravel substrate with plenty of rocks, caves, and open swimming space, along with only light planting to avoid uprooting. With proper space, structure, and a high-protein, fish-based diet, the Fusco Cichlid becomes a dramatic centerpiece fish for experienced cichlid keepers.
Saffron Peacock

Christmas Fulu or Tomato Hap
The Christmas Fulu, also known as the Tomato Hap (Haplochromis phytophagus), is a rare and colorful African cichlid from the Lake Victoria region. Once found in Lake Victoria itself and now extinct there, this species survives only in nearby satellite lakes, making captive-bred specimens especially valuable to conservation-minded aquarists. Christmas Fulu are smaller Hap cichlids with vibrant red and green tones that stand out beautifully in a planted display. They are primarily herbivores, grazing on algae and plant matter, but will also eat plankton and small invertebrates. Offer a diet rich in spirulina-based flakes or pellets, along with vegetable matter and occasional small frozen foods to keep them healthy and brightly colored. These fish require an aquarium of at least 55 gallons, with a sandy substrate and a heavily planted aquascape. Provide plenty of plants, rocks, and open swimming space to mimic their natural habitat and create territories. In the right setup, the Christmas Fulu or Tomato Hap becomes a stunning, active centerpiece that also helps preserve a species no longer found in its original lake.
